Program Overview

The MBA/MPH joint degree is offered through the Tuck School of Business and The Dartmouth Institute for Health Policy and Clinical Practice (TDI). The joint degree program prepares graduates to take on leadership positions in the health sector in both the private and public sectors of the health care industry. The MBA/MPH program brings together the best of leadership and management education with the best of public health research and practice.

About Tuck and The Dartmouth Institute

• The Tuck School of Business educates leaders to better the world of business. The curriculum offers immersive, experiential, hands-on learning that fosters the development of the aptitudes of wise leadership. The program connects students with a powerful alumni network.
• The joint degree program is supported by the Center for Health Care at Tuck, which serves to educate students; engage faculty, alumni and industry experts; and prepare graduates to make significant impact and contributions to the health care sector.
• The Dartmouth Institute for Health Policy and Clinical Practice (TDI) is an international leader in efforts to improve health and health care and is on the forefront in the development of new models for health care delivery and payment.
• TDI’s Master of Public Health (MPH) curriculum is designed to provide students with the fundamental skills, knowledge base, and philosophical foundation in health policy and clinical practice, paying specific attention to public health, clinical and health services research, and health care leadership.
• TDI students have diverse backgrounds: one-third are practicing clinicians, one-third are mid-career professionals, and one-third are recent bachelors’ graduates.

Curriculum

• The joint degree program leads to Master of Business Administration and Master of Public Health degrees and is completed in two years.
• Students spend the full two years as part of the same MBA class, which enables them to fully engage at Tuck and graduate with their class.
• Students spend their first year as a full-time MBA student at Tuck and complete the MBA core curriculum. In their second year, following a summer internship, students begin MPH course work at the beginning of August. The second year of the program involves a blending of required and elective courses at both Tuck and TDI.

Admissions and Financial Aid

• Joint degree students must satisfy the requirements for admission to both the MBA and MPH programs.
• Students can apply to the programs concurrently, or may apply to the MPH program during their first year of enrollment at Tuck. Both Tuck and TDI accept either the GMAT or the GRE. MPH application deadline is December 1 during the Tuck first year.
• Tuition for the MBA/MPH joint degree is based on length of the program but is approximately the same as the cost of the MBA program.
• Financial Aid for each program is applied for separately through Tuck and the Dartmouth Financial Aid Office.

FAQ

Can I submit either the GMAT and/or the GRE?

Yes. Both Tuck and The Dartmouth Institute (TDI) accept either the GMAT or the GRE. Find out more about GMAT/GRE requirements here.

Can I really complete the program in two years?

Yes, the program is an intensive two-year program of study including an extra summer term in August and September. Students who follow the two-year path graduate in June from both Tuck and The Dartmouth Institute with MBA and MPH degrees. 

What is the MBA/MPH Leadership Capstone requirement?

The MBA/MPH Leadership Capstone provides students an opportunity to develop and pursue their own interests in improving health and health care through experiential learning. Students complete an academically robust, self-designed project ranging from addressing a leadership or management issue, creating proposals for interventions and research projects, to conducting policy systemic reviews and recommendations.

What is the TuckGO global requirement?

Tuck has developed a set of carefully designed immersive experiential courses that take place in various countries around the world. To fulfill TuckGO, each student must participate in at least one such course in a country that is new to them. What kind of careers do joint degree students pursue?

Graduates of the MBA/MPH program are trained to take on leadership positions in health care in both the private and public sectors of the health care industry. Many MBA/MPH graduates pursue career opportunities in consulting, work in health care delivery organizations or roles in industry.

I do not have any prior experience in the health care sector. Can I still pursue the joint degree program?

Yes. You do not need to have prior health care experience to qualify for the joint degree program. Students without a health care background have found the joint degree program to be valuable to assist their transition into the health care field.

Can I do a summer internship after my first year at Tuck?

Yes, you can. Students finish Tuck during the last week of May and return to campus to start the MPH program at the beginning of August. Students have completed a range of different internships and work with their employer on their specific availability.
